At two years old, Sang Ae was separated from her mother and twin sister while at a busy market in South Korea. She was soon adopted at an orphanage by a family from Vermont. Now, forty-five years later, Denise McCarty took a DNA test to discover her family origins. As soon as she got off the plane in Incheon International Airport, she ran into the arms of her birth mother. Her twin sister and older brother were also there, crying. ”When I hugged my family, I didn’t want to let them go. It was really hard,” McCarty said. Returning home, she visited her relatives, feasted, and celebrated all the birthdays she missed with family. To come full circle, McCarty, her mother, and her twin sister visited the market where they had been separated. They held hands tightly together. McCarty promised to visit her Korean family once a year.
