Coronavirus is exposing deep rifts in American society. The pandemic is forcing cities to look at new ways to address the issue of homelessness. In Los Angeles, Calif., Lisa Thompkins is a former medic in the U.S. Air Force who has suffered from PTSD and alcohol abuse. She was forced to leave a shelter when it reduced its capacity to minimize the spread of Covid-19. She turned to the Veterans Administration for help, and the V.A. delivered. A government sanctioned campsite has been set up on the VA's West Los Angeles campus. "Within a couple of hours I was here with the tent, sleeping bag and all my worldly belongings," she said. Sober and grateful for all of this, she has access to other support services.
