Thirty-eight years after graduation, Springfield High School has named Tracey Meares valedictorian of the 1984 class. At the time, she had the highest GPA, the first black student to achieve that honor at the school, and was an active participant in school activities. But instead of becoming the first black woman to be class valedictorian, she was named one of the 'top students', a designation shared with a white student who had lower grades. Her parents fought the decision then, unsuccessfully. But in 2020, a group of women in Springfield decided the story should be told and made a documentary, "No Title for Tracey". She said it was difficult to revisit her 17-year-old self, especially given what she has achieved since, but she came around to the importance of telling the story of what so many people experienced back then, and today.
