Veteran broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, 95, has been named Champion of the Earth by the UN's Environment Program (UNEP) for his dedication to telling stories about nature and advocating for protection. As Sir David became more outspoken in his later years about the destruction of nature, he began to advocate for conservation, climate action, and plant-rich diets. At the COP26 climate summit, Sir David reminded world leaders that "those who have done the least to cause this problem are among those to be hardest hit." UNEP chief Inger Andersen said if humanity stands a chance of "averting climate and biodiversity breakdowns …, it's because millions of us fell in love with the planet that he showed us on television,” adding that she hoped his work would inspire people of all ages to become the "restoration generation."
