Boreal Place, a new affordable living space in Calgary, Alberta, offers specialized support for homeless youth who have fallen through cracks in the city's existing systems. Eight youth currently stay at the 25-unit facility as part of a pilot program run by Homespace and the Trellis Society. After seeing research FROM last year showing23 young people makingup 80% of the users of downtown emergency shelter, theycreated a strategy to house small `groups` of youth outside downtown and provide them with intensive support. The city offered Homespace a building at below market value, and a substantial renovation was done quickly for a total cost of $1.3 million.
