Global benevolence increased remarkably in 2021, up almost 25% from its pre-pandemic level, in every global region, says the World Happiness Report 2022. It is measured by the average of donations, volunteers and helping strangers. The 2021 Report used the return of lost wallets to measure trust and benevolence and COVID-19 has provided a similar test, the report says. While it is too early to tell if 2021's increased benevolence will carry forward, the report notes that over the five most recent years, positive emotions remained more than twice as frequent as negative ones, and higher institutional trust was linked to lower pandemic death rates to a greater extent in 2021 than in 2020.
