Ordinary Polish and German citizens, volunteers, are flocking to welcome Ukrainian refugees as they flee the Russian bombardment of their country. An estimated 660,000 have fled into Poland so far, despite freezing temperatures. They are met by Polish and German volunteers who are providing food and warm sheltering tents. Transportation is also available, if they want it, to elsewhere in Poland and Germany via buses and volunteers' own vehicles. Some are being offered places to stay in volunteer's homes. Refugees are greeted by a sign of welcome at the first Polish train station: "Ukrainians we are waiting for you here in Poland -- welcome to Poland". Journalists call it "volunteerism at its absolute best". Sometimes volunteers are having to deal with medical emergencies happening at the border crossings. The light in the darkness here is the loving care shown by the volunteers.
