Rapidly rising food prices are putting a strain on household budgets, forcing more people to turn to their communities for their next meal and grassroots groups are stepping up in new ways to help. Food prices jumped six and a half percent in January 2022 the biggest increase in more than a decade. Food Banks Canada says a combination of high housing costs, pandemic job losses, and rising food costs has caused more people to use food banks. In downtown Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, a church parking lot has been turned into a takeout spot providing meals for people in need. People can choose from a menu that includes items such as pizza, salad, and soup. In Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, a community fridge has been installed and stocked with free groceries and some prepared food, which helps many stretch their tight budgets. In the north of Canada, food insecurity is the highest in the country and the Qajuqturvik Community Food Center is selling boxes of traditional foods to keep its local community fed.
