An Ottawa shelter has received a flood of donations after staff and residents were harassed on the first weekend of a truck convoy protesting COVID-19 mandates. On Jan. 29, the shelter's food service was disrupted by a small group of convoy protesters who demanded a meal and harassed staff and volunteers. After the Shepherds of Good Hope tweeted about the incidents, people began sending in donations that in two weeks have totaled roughly $750,000 and came from across Canada and as far away as Australia. Shelter CEO Deirdre Freiheit says the shelter is offering support to traumatized people who have been affected by the convoy. It also has been dealing with trucks blocking the emergency services lane, causing problems as paramedics and police drop off people with substance abuse disorders. Most of the donated money will go to speeding up two supportive housing projects currently under construction.
