On the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, the Sea Women of Melanesia is a non-governmental organization working to train indigenous women that are passionate about marine conservation. The project started when Dr. Andy Lewis, founder of Coral Sea Foundation, was approached by an indigenous woman requesting if he could create a program. Since then, the idea has grown to over 40 members who safeguard 43 marine regions. The women of Melanesia are trained in marine science and underwater photography; at the same time, the women bring their own indigenous knowledge of the seas. Paired together, they hope counteract the effects of climate change that could destroy ninety percent of the world's coral reefs.
