A government minister in Iceland announced the country may cease commercial whale hunting by 2024 as the practice is no longer deemed profitable. Since JapanIceland's main consumerresumed whaling in its waters after decades of a hiatus, demand for the exported meat plummeted. Operations in processing plants were also disrupted by social distancing regulations and no-fishing coastal zones caused a spike in costs. Until recently, the general public has shifted towards admiring the marine mammals, with some thousands of people coming to visit the island in 2019.
