'National Wetland Decadal Change Atlas' was released on the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2022 recently, highlighting the changes which have happened in wetlands across India. Two new Ramsar sites in India in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat were announced. Bakhira wildlife sanctuary is part of the special Central Asian Flyway and hosts a number of migratory water fowls and Khijadia sanctuary in Gujarat provides a safe habitat to endangered and vulnerable species. The Convention on Wetlands was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971 to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands for planetary health. India has 49 Ramsar sites, wetlands of national importance, covering 10,93,636 Ha, the highest in South Asia.
