Redesigning public transit could make Philadelphia a city that better serves women and children and other vulnerable people. Women are 80% more likely to make multiple trips per day, often to several locations, are more worried about walking alone at night in dark areas, and need twice as many public restrooms. About 16% of households are underserved by public transit, and women, who make up 64% of Philly's bus and subway riders, are particularly affected. 5th Square, Philadelphia's urbanist political action committee, advocates transit-only streets and redesigning the bus network to make service more frequent, provide shelters with benches, and make sidewalks near stops more accessible sidewalks. For the past few years, women have outnumbered men in the city -- by about 90,000 in 2019.
