The Canada Home Share program, which pairs seniors wanting to stay in their homes with students needing affordable housing, is expanding to Winnipeg. Seniors are matched with students needing an affordable place to live, who do a few hours of light housework each week and pay about $400 to $600 a month. Dr. Raza Mirza, network manager for the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly, which created the program in 2018, says it's as much about helping seniors feel less isolated and forging real connections with an older generation as about making housing more affordable. "What you see from … some of the stories in this program is that people quickly forget about the age difference between these two individuals. And actually what happens is that a very strong friendship develops between most of these individuals."
