Computer scientist Erico Pinheiro has invented a drone system that is delivering medical supplies to the remote communities of his island nation, Cape Verde. The technology is already saving lives and reaching the smallest and farthest islands – places it would take days for medical professionals to access. He built the first drone in 2015 to help his grandfather sow seeds; with the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to repurpose the drone system to carry medical supplies. Currently, the largest drone can carry 5 kilograms and travels 10 kilometers. Pinheiro’s dream is to have a drone on each island and have them travel between the islands.
