Six First Nations and the University of Alberta are teaming up to train more Indigenous physicians and other medical practitioners, helping improve healthcare for First Nations in northeast Alberta. University president Bill Flanagan said the initiative will also improve cultural sensitivities for all healthcare workers, recognize the value of traditional healing practices, and close gaps in health outcomes between indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. "The new buffalo for our people is education," said Frog Lake First Nation Chief Greg Desjarlais, chief of Tribal Chief Ventures Inc. "That's where we have to push our children to, our grandchildren, and we have to open these doors for them and pave the way."
