Monette Manor nursing home in Arkansas, US, was struck by a tornado. There was little time to act. Housing 67 elderly residents between the ages 80 and 100 years old, nursing staff like Barbara Richards threw themselves onto the residents, shielding them from falling debris as winds ripped through roofs, walls, and windows. Because of their quick instincts, many of the elderly were saved from harm. Firefighters and rescue responders arrived to pull the people from rubbles of cinder block and dust. “This could have been my grandparents,” Scott Peake, a storm chaser, said. “We did everything we could to comfort them.”
