This year, the world faces an unexpected shortage in maple syrup. Which is why the Canadian group Quebec Maple Syrup Producers announced it will release 50 million pounds of maple syrup from its reserves to meet the needs for the sweet liquid. "That's why the reserve is made," said Helene Normandin, communications director of the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers. "To never miss maple syrup. And we won't miss maple syrup!" To replenish reserves for the future, the company plans to tap into 7 million more maple trees. Pancakes and waffles can still be a treat for the holidays.
