“Corn defined us,” says Deb Echo-Hawk, the Pawnee Keeper of the Seeds. “Growing it again is a way to circle back to who we really are and make corn central to our lives again.” Pawnee corn is blue, red, yellow, white and multi-colored. In 2003, Rhonda O'Brien asked Echo-Hawk for seeds to grow an authentic Pawnee garden, and Echo-Hawk entrusted most of her 75 kernels of eagle corn to O'Brien. By 2010, with time and patience, long-lost varieties had reawakened on Nebraska farms. This year, Pawnee corn was grown in 20 gardens by 14 different Nebraska farmers. And it feels to the Pawnee that they, too, have reawakened, once again the People of the Corn.
