Cephalopods like octopuses and squid, and decapods like lobsters and crabs, have now been offered protection by the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill in UK. More than 300 scientific studies have come up with findings that these creatures are sentient, that is, can experience pain or distress. These animals have been protected in scientific laboratories but not in the outside world, where inhuman methods of handling, transporting and slaughtering are the norm. The science is now clear that crustaceans and mollusks can feel pain and therefore it is only right they are covered by this vital piece of legislation, says UK's Animal Welfare Minister, Lord Goldsmith.
