From Afghan provinces, to Kabul where they narrowly missed an airport suicide bombing, then going into hiding, to Pakistan on temporary visas, the girls aged 13 to 19 finally arrived safely in the UK. The outcome was a team effort with support and lobbying by Leeds United Football, former British military veterans and interpreters, a Jewish aid organization, and many others including even Kim Kardashian-West who funded the flight. "Now they can start a new life and breathe freedom," says Khalida Popal, former manager of Afghanistan's national women's team and a coordinator of the rescue.
