More than 6,500 of the UK's iconic red call boxes are now mini community libraries, art galleries or storage units for defibrillators thanks to Adopt a Kiosk, which allows local organizations to buy a red phone box for 1 pound ($1.40) and turn it into something useful. Of the 21,000 remaining boxes, 5,000 will be protected because they are in areas with poor mobile coverage or considered accident or suicide hotspots. Boxes from which more than 52 calls have been made in the past 12 months also will be protected. Almost 150,000 calls to emergency services were made from phone boxes from May 2019 to May 2020, and some 45,000 calls to other helplines.
