This year a record number of 79 leatherback sea turtles nests was reported from the beaches of Broward County, South Florida. This is more than double that from the number of nests in 2012. Previous years saw a 40 percent drop in their population over just three generations of turtles due to entanglements with fishing gear, pollution, habitat loss, and climate crisis. Decrease in human activity and artificial lighting from the pandemic may have aided their resurgence. Among all the species of sea turtles, leatherback turtles are the largest and most migratory, and can weigh up to as much as 2,000 pounds.
