Ordinary Australian households are installing rooftop solar at record rates, cutting their power bills and helping keep the country's economy moving during the pandemic. Australia has the most solar per capita in the world – nearly 1kW of panels per person, and six jobs are created for each megawatt installed. In 2020, 370,000 new rooftop systems were installed, bringing the total to more than 3 million systems producing 13GW. SA Power Networks says it expects to see South Australia’s energy needs regularly being supplied 100% from rooftop solar sometime very soon. Clean Energy Council chief Kane Thornton says this household-led transformation will be critical to Australia achieving a target of net-zero emissions by 2050.
