“I don’t let myself get old,” says 80 year-old Mike Palen, who still lifts 700-pound weights regularly, much to the inspiration of senior gym-goers and the consternation of his wife. Though his Olympic ambitions cooled after marriage and children, he continues to lift the heavy stuff two or three times a week. Even a host of injuries and doctors’ warnings have failed to stop him and he claims he still has strength and can still ski. Palen has science on his side – regular exercise promotes neuroplasticity, the production of new neurons and helps to maintain bone density. “Time flies by so fast, and before you know it, you’re 80. [Let] an exercise of your choice be your vehicle to good health,” is Mike Palen’s advice to youth.
