Reports reflect that the food industry creates more than a quarter of total greenhouse gas emissions and nearly sixty percent of the damage to global biodiversity. In the United Kingdom, five of the biggest supermarkets Tesco, Sainbury's, Waitrose, Co-op, and M&Spromised that they would reduce their carbon emissions, deforestation, food waste and packaging materials. The pledge is to half their environmental impact by 2030. "The promises these CEOs have made are game-changing," says Tanya Steele, the chief executive of WWF conservation group. "We hope other food retailers will follow in their footsteps, so that every shopper can be confident that the products they buy aren't fueling the climate crisis and pushing precious wildlife closer to the brink." Efforts will be monitored by the WWF.
