Ithaca, New York, has become the first US city to decide to fully decarbonize all its buildings, which equate to 40% of its carbon footprint. With the help of its partner BlocPower, Ithaca lined up $100 million in private financing from Alturus for the effort. The first phase will cover electrification projects for 1,000 residential buildings and 600 commercial buildings, many built before 1940. "Not enough attention is being paid to what works in small American cities, and that's not unique to decarbonization," said mayor Svante Myrick. Ithaca receives 80% of its power from hydroelectric and nuclear power plants.
