At 89-years-old Manfred Steiner is finally what he always wanted to be: a physicist. In September, Steiner successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation. “It’s an old dream that starts in my childhood. I always wanted to become a physicist,” said Steiner. He took a circuitous path to get there. He fled the chaos of his birthplace of Vienna as World War II ended. His relatives urged him to take up medicine, which he did and had a distinguished career as an MD. After retiring from medicine, Steiner started taking physics classes and eventually enrolled in the graduate physics program at Brown University. With the Ph.D. under his belt, he is not yet prepared to rest on his laurels. Steiner plans to continue his research.
