As the US copes with major threats to its honeybee colonies, a California startup is using hi-tech methods to help beekeepers manage and protect beehives. BeeHero, which uses sensors to track 30 distinct colony metrics, can predict hundreds of different scenarios in each hive so beekeepers can fix problems. Veteran Idaho beekeeper Larry Johnson, who now has sensors in 3,000 of his colonies, says he gets information via his phone so he knows which hives need attention. BeeHero, which works with five of the top 20 beekeepers in the US, has just secured $19m in fresh funding to increase its services for large food growing operations.
