It started as a family joke in hard times - and wound up as a holiday in a luxurious Italian hotel. Texas grandfather Ezell Holley called his budget hotel 'the Waldorf Astoria' during last winter's storms, and that caught the attention of the Rome Cavalieri, a Waldorf Astoria, which sent him an invitation. In September, the family headed to Rome, where the hotel management ushered Grandpa to the penthouse - with its hot tubs, star-decorated ceiling, Andy Warhol art, and Karl Lagerfeld sofa - and they visited the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Pantheon and the Vatican. Ezell visited Rome long ago when he was in the Army, and his son had been planning a return trip as a surprise before the pandemic got in the way.
