Following successful pilot programs in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi that showed the world's first malaria vaccine can be practically delivered despite requiring four doses, immunization will be rolled out across sub-Saharan Africa. The vaccine, RTS,S, must be given at five, six, seven and 18 months. More than 2.3 million doses were administered during the pilot programs. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, describes it as a historic breakthrough for science, child health, and malaria control. In Africa, more than 260,000 children died from the disease in 2019.
