Steel production accounts for 7-8% of all carbon dioxide emissions FROM fossil fuel use, and it’s a difficult industry to clean up. But a group of companies and organizations are making tangible progress in tackling some of the challenges. ResponsibleSteel is a nonprofit that brings together players in the steel supply chain to figure out how best to reduce emissions. SteelZero is a buyers’ consortium whose `member`s pledge to use at least 50% net-zero steel by 2030 and 100% by 2050. Steel decarbonization experts says it will be critical to reduce emissions as the equivalent of all structures in New York City will be built every month for the next 40 years in the Global South.
