The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) finalized a $1.9 billion water rights settlement, resolving thousands of tribal claims to waterways in western Montana. U.S. Secretary of Interior Deb Haaland signed the compact last week confirming CSKT's water rights, as well as funding for an irrigation project on 1,300 miles of canals, funding for habitat restoration, and transferring of the control of the National Bison Range to native tribes. Our elders continually remind us to protect our water," says CSKT Chairwoman Shelly R. Fyant. "And this day marks the beginning of the water compact implementation that will protect the water for all generations to come."
