The Ministry for Ecological Transformation in Spain has come out with a decree to ban the sale of fruit and vegetables in plastic wrapping in supermarkets and grocery stores from 2023. The new regulation also contains measures to encourage the purchase of loose, unpackaged produce and use of non-bottled water. Other measures include a deposit and return system for plastic containers and preset targets for the hospitality sector as well as households to reduce and reuse. It has been a long drawn-out battle for environmentalists, and while there are doubts about the efficacy of some of the measures and the speed at which they need to be implemented, it is a hopeful sign that governments across Europe are stepping up with timelines and targets to reduce and recycle plastic and do away with unnecessary packaging.
