A small furry marsupial that once roamed the plains of Australia has been brought back from the brink of extinction after 30 years of conservation efforts. The Eastern Barred Bandicoot, whose numbers had plummeted because of foxes and habitat destruction, now is classed as "endangered" rather than "extinct in the wild" after its numbers jumped to 1,500 from 150. Conservation teams invested millions in setting up captive breeding programs, creating predator-free sites and moving some to fox-free islands. It is the first time Australia has changed the status of an animal in this way.
