European rules against discarding fish at sea which have no commercial value or when annual quotas for a commercial species are limited created a problem: fish limited by annual quotas which cannot easily be avoided or discarded by fishers. In 2019, when a west coast of Scotland fishery was required to cut cod catches dramatically, a real-time reporting app collaboratively designed with fishers helped them avoid cod. Using mapping, the Bycatch Avoidance Tool, BATmap, allows vessels to submit catch data within two hours. Participating fishers are alerted when cod has been caught so they can decide when and where to fish.
