The Aboriginal Justice Agreement, an initiative aimed at reducing high incarceration rates among Indigenous people in Australia's Northern Territory, has received a $2 million gift. About 85 percent of the NT's prison population are Indigenous people, who are incarcerated at 12 times their non-Indigenous peers. When the Agreement's seven-year plan was announced, the NT government had only been able to commit funding of $4.5 million for the first year. Now the Paul Ramsay Foundation has confirmed its $2 million contribution to the initiative. "The investment will go toward several initiatives aimed at breaking the cycle of incarceration in the Northern Territory, which we are developing in partnership with local Aboriginal-led community organisations and the government," the foundation's chief operating officer, Cindy Penrose, said.
