Pattern Energy's $1.8 billion Western Spirit wind project, nearing completion in east-central New Mexico, will be the largest single-phase renewable energy build-out in US history. Including four wind farms that will generate 1,050 megawatts -- enough to power 365,000 homes -- and the 155-mile transmission line to bring power to California, it is the biggest such project in New Mexico in 35 years. It has created more than 1,000 construction jobs and, once operational, will provide about 100 permanent jobs and pay out $36 million in property tax over 40 years, $3 million a year to local government and school districts and $426 million in lease payments to local landowners.
