The government says it plans to ban single-use plastic cutlery, plates and polystyrene cups in England and will launch a consultation on the policy this autumn. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland already have plans to ban the cutlery, and the European Union brought in a similar ban in July. On average, each person in England uses 18 single-use plastic plates and 37 single-use plastic cutlery items every year. Ministers also hope to introduce a deposit return scheme on plastic bottles to encourage recycling and a plastic packaging tax. If approved, the ban may take over a year to become law. Activists say faster and more comprehensive action on plastic is needed.
