Beijing has banned written exams for six- and seven-year-olds, as part of reforms aimed at relieving pressure on pupils and reducing education inequality. Students previously took exams from first grade on. Exams in other years are limited to once a term, with mid-term and mock examinations allowed in junior high school. Earlier this year, written homework for first and second graders was banned and homework for junior high students limited to 1.5 hours per night. In July, private tutoring firms were required to become non-profit and banned from giving lessons in core subjects on weekends and holidays. Teachers in Beijing now must rotate schools every six years, and 'priority' classes for gifted students are banned.
