Nancy Knowlton wants to replace ocean pessimism with ocean optimism, pointing out good news stories in marine conservation that people don't know. Knowlton, a coral reef biologist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, created the #oceanoptimism hashtag to share such stories. Successful marine conservation efforts are neither quick nor cheap and require trust and collaboration, she says, but focusing on achievements motivates people to work toward new successes. Successes include protection of whales and sea turtles, better fisheries management, expansion of marine protected areas, progress against pollution, restoration of coastal ecosystems, and increased action generally.
