Motherhood Beyond Bars, a small nonprofit in Georgia that supports parents who give birth while in prison and their newborns post-separation, also helps the people who are caring for the children. There were 3,779 women in Georgia's prisons in 2017, up from 497 in 1978, and almost 1,400 pregnant prisoners throughout the US in 2016-2017. Motherhood Beyond Bars hopes to help build programs and policies that speak to the needs of these unique families. In her work, program director Vanessa Garrett often draws on her own experience of entering prison, leaving behind a 10-year-old son and an infant daughter.
