When Rosata Niyonzima arrived in Portland, Ore., from Burundi via a refugee camp in Tanzania for nine years, she couldn't find African eggplant in grocery stores. So she sourced seeds from Africa and began growing it in a plot in a community garden. After getting access to more land through the nonprofit Growing Gardens, Happiness Family Farm's organic crops now cover 3.5 acres. Customers in the local African community value both the produce and the connection it gives them to their motherland. Other customers have come to love produce that was initially new to them.
