A heat wave has swept through the Northwest where temperatures soar to 103 F in Portland, Oregon and 100 F in Bellingham Washington. In areas such as Seattle, many do not have air conditioning. The recent heat waves have impacted the homeless population. "It's miserable. I can't handle the heat no matter what. So, I mean, it's hard to stand. Even in the shade it's too hot," says Zalitis, who became homeless last year when his apartment room burned down. Kind volunteers in Oregon rushed to distribute water, portable fans, popsicles, and information on cooling centers to their local homeless populations. In Portland, a nonprofit organization delivered water and other items in three vans to homeless encampments. Across the state, cities and counties have opened cooling centers, extended public library hours, and waived bus fare for those headed to cooling centers.
