Your haircut can help clean up an oil spill if you go to one of the 900,000 hair salons in 30 countries that take part in the Clean Wave program run by Matter of Trust. The idea started with Alabama stylist Phil McCrory, who partnered with Matter of Trust in 1998 to begin producing fiber mats from hair collected at salons and fur from pet groomers. The mats can be washed and reused up to ten times. These days, Matter of Trust is focusing on smaller spills - storm drains and motor oil leaks from roadways. Ten satellite locations exist, in Chile, Japan, Finland, Greece, England, France, Belgium and Spain, and the group is aiming for 300 such locations around the world.
