Illinois Governor Jaime Pritzker recently signed the Jett Hawkins Act, which is intended to stop hair discrimination in schools. Earlier this year, four-year-old Jett Hawkins was told his braids violated the school's dress code. Under the law, the state board of education will examine school handbooks every year to ensure there's no language that discriminates against Black or Brown hairstyles including braids and locks. Ida Nelson, Jett's mother said, Our hair is an extension of who we are as a race and is deeply connected with our cultural identity.
