Wild beavers have colonized lochs and rivers across the southern Highlands of Scotland. NatureScot, the government conservation agency, estimates 1,000 beavers now live in the wild. Beavers, once trapped into extinction, have slowly been reintroduced across Britain some officially, some quietly by re-wilding enthusiasts. The NatureScot survey confirmed beavers had established 251 territories, more than double those found three years ago. The animals have boosted nature tourism, reconfiguring riverbanks, ponds and wooded lochsides.
