It is probably Ireland's most ambitious rewilding experiment. Randal Plunkett, 21st baron of Dunsany, a 650-hectare (1,600-acre) estate in the middle of Ireland, decided seven years ago to rewild over 300 hectares. Returning biodiversity has vindicated his strategy. There are 23 types of grass instead of three. Trees regenerated and multiplied. Lush, diverse vegetation attracted butterflies and insects, which drew birds. Botanists from Trinity College Dublin now come to study the transformation. Plunkett runs Dunsany on income from the remaining farm land, and from film-making.
