Parents in Japan are sending bags of rice that weigh the same as their newborn babies to relatives who cannot visit them, due to the pandemic. The bags come in a wide range of designs, some shaped like a baby in a blanket, so that relatives can feel as though they are hugging the new arrival while looking at a picture of their face attached to the front. The idea started about 14 years ago when the rice shop owner created the product to share with family who lived far away when her son was born. So we decided to make bags of rice that were the same weight and shape as the baby so that the relatives could feel the cuteness, said Naruo Ono, rice shop owner and inventor of the concept. The rice babies have become even more popular during the pandemic.
