In Tasmania, Australia, the 144MW Cattle Hill wind farm has a special relationship with the Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle living in the area. Thanks to its aerial monitoring and detection system, IndentiFlight, the 16 tower-mounted optical unit system shuts down the farm's wind turbines if sees that an eagle is on an impending collision path. The system receives about 400 curtailment signals daily, with most occurring during the day. Each shutdown lasts on average for two minutes. Since the farm's first turbine was turned on in November 2019, there have been no recorded Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle or white-bellied sea eagle impacts. Leigh Walters, Goldwind's project director, said, "We have had a lot of support from industry, government departments and the community. It is great to be actually investing in something that is making a difference, despite spending significant costs on doing it, while adding significant value beyond the consent conditions."
